Small Groups (Part 1): Life Groups

RevolutionChurch-Logo This is the first of several posts about small groups and Revolution Church. This series of posts was inspired by a good friend’s (Quinn Hooks) Group Dynamics 511 class at Liberty.

Small groups are a concept that God placed in my heart early on as a major piece of the vision for Revolution Church.

So… what is a small group and what makes it so?

Small groups can take place in several forms. Probably the most common small group setup is traditional church’s Sunday Schools on church grounds. Other approaches are gatherings of people in homes, restaurants, ball fields, and work places.

The size of these groups, regardless of approach, can range from 2 up to 40 people. General rule of thumb is once it gets too big for a “small” group, the group should multiply, or birth another group.

The main purpose of the small group is to provide an intimate setting in which to study the Bible, an environment for fellowship, and a secure place to share with and encourage one another.

We at Revolution Church take the “other” approach to small groups (mentioned above) which we call Life Groups.

Why the name?
Simple… We see the small group environment as a place where life is done with one another.

Why this approach?
First and foremost, it is Biblical. (We will cover this aspect in more detail in part 3 of the series.) Our groups grow and form organically. That means that the church does not force the groups to be of a certain life stage, marital status, or location. The only restriction is size. We feel that once the number of adults gets more than 12-14 adults, it is time to birth another group.

Tune in tomorrow for part 2 in the series. Let me encourage you to subscribe by email or RSS if you are not already. If you have any questions through this series (or anytime for that matter), please leave a comment. If you wish to comment privately, please note that in the comment.

I can’t wait to see how this series develops. I like the concept of not having age, life stage, etc restrictions on the group.

So, how did you come up with the 12-14 member size? Just curious.
