College Football Needs a Playoff
Year after year, every football fan I know begs for a playoff system. I do not understand the reasoning for the NCAA not wanting this. It is the only way to have an undisputed champion.
Here is what I propose… seems so simple…
We must remember that the original purpose of the BCS rankings is to ensure that the #1 team in the nation be determined by the winner of the #1 and #2 teams playing each other. This year is yet another year where this is not a 100% sure way (as was just about every year since it’s inception) to prove who is #1.
So… If the BCS truly wishes to find their champion…
I am pretty sure that the best team in the nation is at least ranked in the top 8 in BCS rankings.
I say start there…
So, here are the first round match-ups in my playoffs…
#1 Oklahoma vs #8 Penn State at the Citi Rose Bowl
#4 Alabama vs #5 USC at the Capital One Bowl#2 Florida vs #7 Texas Tech at the Chick-Fil-A Bowl
#3 Texas vs #6 Utah at the Cotton Bowl
Then round two (Play along with my fictitious playoffs)
#1 Oklahoma vs #4 Alabama at the AllState Sugar Bowl
#2 Florida vs #3 Texas at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
Then for the BCS National Championship Game…
#1 Oklahoma vs #2 Florida at the FedEx Orange Bowl
In the matter of three weeks, eight of the best teams in the nation would have the ability to prove their case for #1 claims…
Think about this year…
Texas & Texas Tech could have made the case with their one loss season involved in a virtual tie for the BIG 12 champions ship with Oklahoma.
Utah (proved to be no joke after they beat my Crimson Tide) would have had a chance to make their case.
Alabama would have had a shot with their only loss being in a conference championship game (which some conferences don’t even have) after finishing regular season undefeated in the SEC.
What about USC with the only loss to Oregon State.
Penn State…
You get the point…
Forget putting the conference champs in the BCS games automatically… What if the conference champs suck and are not even ranked… that makes no sense at all.
If were watching the Capital One Bowl (think money, viewers, and overall interest), would you rather watch Bama crush the Trojans or this years real match-up of Georgia vs Michigan State. Unless you are a Bulldog or Spartans fan… the answer is the #4 vs #5 teams in the nation pounding heads!
I know what some of you are thinking…
What about all the other teams like South Carolina, Clemson, Oregon, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Ole’ Miss, or Air Force???
Let them play football, too!!! Use the existing bowl games, and play them before and during the playoffs (just like it is done currently). Keep the Champs Sports Bowl, Independence Bowl, and even the International Bowl (Rant: Why in the crap did Buffalo and Connecticut play football on January 3rd? Shouldn’t that date be for the best teams? Rant over).
One can dream of having an undisputed champ…
I almost titled this post “Let’s take the C out of BCS and just call it what it is…” but I thought better… People may not know that BS stands for Bummer Salad.
